Shaunna Lyons grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. She
has lived and studied all over the world. She received her BFA from the
University of Georgia in 1995 which included a journey to Nepal to experience and
study the culture and potters of that country. For about 10 years Shaunna was
off the clay grid getting some life experiences. She started and sold a retail
herbal business, traveled around the world and worked for 2 years as a birding
field guide in Southern Africa. In 2005 Shaunna restarted her clay career with
an assistantship at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. Currently she resides in
Bakersville, North Carolina on the side of a mountain with her extra large dog
Charlotte, making pots full time.
I believe
all my life’s experiences contribute to my work as an artist. Some experiences
translate in my work more evidently than others. For example, I think my
experience as a field guide in South Africa with a specialty in birds is quite
apparent. Other influences include overseas travel to third world countries and
the pottery of indigenous people. I work intuitively, letting myself be playful
and whimsical with each piece. Also important to me is the process of clay. I
expect my pieces to reflect the sensual and lush nature of the clay.
My forms are created using slabs
with wheel thrown and hand-built molds. When the pieces are leather hard they
are painted with slips, terra sigillata and fritted stains. They are finished
with a variety of cone 04 clear glazes.
