Marian Parkes

My fascination with clay started early in my adult life. As a college freshman, I signed up for a beginning pottery class. Being the stubborn and independent sort…I balked when the instructor told all of the girls they’d have to cut their fingernails. I ended up transferring to another class which has long since been forgotten. That was almost the end of the story. But clay continued to draw me.  For many years, it was just an appreciation of the art but soon developed into a compulsion to collect pottery. Then a few years ago, I attended Clay Day at the Folk Art Center in Asheville and things changed. That day I decided to take a beginning pottery class at the local community college. I struggled. And struggled. But, again…being the stubborn sort, I stuck with it and gradually things actually became more round and less wobbly!

Most of my work is wheel-thrown and of a functional nature. I’m influenced by another long time interest, the culinary arts, and find this melds well with my love of making pots. I’ve been lucky for the last several years to work and learn at the Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts, where creativity thrives. I feel that being in this environment with my peers and mentors has helped me advance my art and put me on a path that feels right.  At long last.
