What draws me to pottery is that it is a tactile craft, you can create forms that are not only pleasing to the eye but to the hand. I was born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. I have always been fascinated by the changes in feel and appearance that occur throughout the seasons, like the lichen and moss on a well worn stone or the gentle greatness of the mountains experienced by sitting atop Mt. Mitchell. I believe this is one of the reasons texture is important to me. I want a person to want to touch the form, often using contrasting smooth and rough surfaces. I tend to use subtler/earthier colors that will not distract from the texture and surface of the piece I am doing.
